A visit to one of the last, least commercialized and overrun Mayan archeological sites near Merida

Imagine bumping along a rough dirt road and seeing before you a giant metropolis - some claim it is bigger than the majestic Chichen Itzá - dating back hundreds of years (300 BC to 1200 AD) and still mostly covered in the dry tropical vegetation so typical of this part of the Yucatan peninsula.

As you approach, buildings come into focus both restored and unrestored all around you. A fascinating tour of the site ensues and you are captivated by the history of this ancient wonder.

Welcome to Oxkintok!

A Mayan arch at Oxkintok. Through here one can observe the sunrise, perfectly aligned, at the spring equinox

After this tour we can, if you like, visit a cenote in which you can enjoy a peaceful and refreshing float in one of these majestic underground pools. Or we visit a nearby town and peruse the market and perhaps have something local and delicious for lunch.

This is a great day trip for fans of Mayan archeology and the feel is quite different from the usual destinations that are often just too busy.
