Leydi is the niece of our initial contact in the village, don Monchis. To continue supporting her family after Monchi sadly passed away, she now provides our guests with a home-cooked meal when we go to experience the cenotes. A meal with this family is quite often the highlight of people’s visit to the Yucatan.
With tourism all but vanished, their incomes have been severely impacted. These days, they work around the house and wait patiently for the pandemic to run its course, with the hope that tourism will be back sooner than later. Another problem is leaving and re-entering the town. There are roadblocks at the entrance and no one who doesn’t live there can come in. If they, who do live there forget their ID, and have to go to the nearest large town (Tecoh) for a medical issue or to buy something, it can problematic upon returning.
And, as is the the case with Marisela, we are supporting Leydi and her family with a food, cleaning and personal items package on a regular basis to make up for the lack of income. If you want to assist with this project, it would be very welcome and you can let us know by sending an email here.
